The Haryana Police have arrested YouTuber Wasim Akram from the Palwal district on charges of spying, alleging that he has been cooperating with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Pakistani High Commission. Wasim was arrested by the police on Wednesday after they found out his connections to Pakistan. Read on to know more about the case.
YouTuber Wasim Akram Arrested For Having Ties With Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence
Wasim Akram, who lived in Kot village in Palwal, had a YouTube channel dedicated to the history of Mewat. Investigators claim he had been in contact with Pakistani handlers for the last three years and shared SIM cards and other details with them. His arrest on Wednesday followed that of another accused spy, Taufiq, from Alimev village, who was apprehended by Palwal police last week.
Authorities announced that Akram’s name cropped up during Taufiq’s interrogation. Officials claim the two men had been in touch with ISI agents and officials from Pakistan’s High Commission via internet-based calls. Sources say Wasim Akram first met with a Pakistani agent called Danish back in 2021 when he was seeking a visa to Islamabad. While his family claims he never visited Pakistan, police are certain he had established cross-border contacts that made him an individual of interest to the country.
Forensic officials have extracted incriminating WhatsApp chats from Akram’s mobile phone, including some deleted ones. These purportedly indicate his consistent interaction with foreign agents. The cyber cell is in the process of examining the evidence for additional leads.
Superintendent of Police Varun Singla said that the case has been transferred to the Palwal crime branch and other investigating authorities. Intelligence Bureau officials are also probing the case to determine whether national security was breached.
Authorities further stated that additional arrests may be made in the next few days since the network is broader than thought earlier. Taufiq, who was arrested on September 26, has been charged with sharing sensitive defence-related information with Pakistan from 2022. The two men are currently in police remand, and questioning continues.
