Vinesh Phogat Returns To Wrestling
People often asked Vinesh if Paris was the end, and for a long time, she didn’t know. She needed distance, from the mat, the pressure, the expectations, even her own ambitions—to finally breathe. She said she used that time to reflect on the highs, heartbreaks, and sacrifices of her journey, and in that process realised she still loves the sport and still wants to compete.
In the quiet, she rediscovered the fire she thought she’d lost, buried under exhaustion but never gone. The discipline and fight were still in her, and a part of her had never left the mat. Now she’s stepping toward LA28 with renewed courage and determination. This time, she added, she won’t be walking alone; her son will be by her side, her biggest motivation and little cheerleader.
India’s Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat made history after becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic gold medal bout. Her historic run included a surprising victory over Japan’s four-time world champion Yui Susaki, which set up a fantasy title clash and guaranteed India at least silver. But two hours before the final, tragedy struck. Vinesh was disqualified from the competition after the normal morning weigh-in revealed that he was 100 grams overweight.

According to United World Wrestling (UWW) standards, failure to weigh in at any stage of an event invalidates all previous results. Vinesh contested the verdict, claiming that she deserved the silver medal she gained by winning three bouts on Day 1.
