Vinesh Phogat Dedicates Her Win To Future Women Wrestlers; ‘Khota Sikka’ Made History After All!

Vinesh Phogat was described as “The talk of the wrestling world” as she entered the Champ-de-Mars Arena in Paris for her Olympic semifinal match. Vinesh Phogat made it to the Olympic final, an accomplishment no other Indian female wrestler has made. She arrived there by defeating Yui Susaki, who hadn’t lost an international match until Tuesday, something no other wrestler had accomplished.

Vinesh Phogat Enters The Finals At The Olympics

Not only did Vinesh Phogat leave Yui Susaki stunned and the thousands glued to their respective viewing sets in disbelief after her unexpected 3-2 victory in the first tie, but she also wrote the script for a comfortable run to the final on Tuesday, becoming the first Indian woman to compete for the Olympic gold in wrestling. However, Phogat was battling for a greater cause rather than the need to prove herself given everything she had gone through since the Tokyo Olympics, particularly in the last few months, which is what inspired her to write that incredible race on Day 11 of the Paris Games.

She proved her tactical prowess once more later in the day, defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the quarterfinals to guarantee herself at least a silver medal in her third Olympic competition. But according to Bajrang Punia, who stood by her side during the 18-month protest against former WFI chairman Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the medal isn’t likely to symbolize her skill on the mat but instead is a struggle for the future generation of wrestlers.

Vinesh Phogat was sleeping on the streets of New Delhi, while Yui Susakis, Sarah Ann Hildebrants, and Gusman Lopezs were preparing for the Paris Olympics, competing at the highest level, and gaining momentum last year. She was fighting for her fellow wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former head of the Indian wrestling body, who has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers. Vinesh refrained from mat fighting for almost fifteen months. She repelled it with force.

On Wednesday, Vinesh will compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, an American, for the gold medal.
