Sonam Raghuvanshi Posed As Victim To Escape Arrest In Husband’s Murder, Failed Due To Poor Planning: Police

The bizarre case of Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder during his honeymoon has taken another chilling turn. According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is now under arrest, allegedly tried to pose as a victim after planning his killing but failed miserably. Sonam, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, had gone missing along with her husband while vacationing in Meghalaya. Their disappearance on May 23 sparked concern, but it was only on June 2 that Raja’s body was discovered near a gorge. Sonam, however, resurfaced days later in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, claiming she had been kidnapped and drugged.

What Did UP Police Say About Sonam Raghuvanshi?

But UP police weren’t buying it. Additional Director General of Police, Amitabh Yash, told reporters that Sonam’s attempt to mislead authorities was amateurish at best. “She tried to act like a victim, saying she was forcibly brought to Ghazipur after being drugged. But she clearly had no understanding of how police work,” he said, adding that her cover story quickly fell apart.

The police believe that Sonam reached out to her family intentionally, hoping to build a narrative that she had been abducted. Around 3 a.m. on Monday, she contacted them saying she was at a roadside eatery on the Ghazipur-Varanasi highway. Her family then informed the Madhya Pradesh police, who in turn alerted the local authorities. Sonam was picked up, medically examined, and taken to a women’s shelter.

At the One-Stop Centre where she was kept, she reportedly denied all involvement. A staff member, speaking anonymously to Hindustan Times, said Sonam claimed she had been kidnapped and insisted she hadn’t harmed anyone. However, the police say the evidence tells a different story. Sonam has been arrested along with four others, including her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, who also used to work under her. Meghalaya police suspect the extramarital affair was central to the motive. They believe Sonam only surrendered after learning that Raj had already been arrested.

Investigators also noted that Sonam had bought only a one-way ticket to Meghalaya, suggesting she never intended to return with her husband. Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, said their relationship had been strained and Sonam was often in contact with Raj.
According to UP Police, the plot may have been premeditated, but executed with glaring flaws that ultimately gave her away.
