I wonder how easy it is to leave a bride/groom at the altar? And especially for silly reasons like a high-school report card? Well, as bizarre as it sounds, it is a reality for a family in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. A man identified as Sonu allegedly called off his wedding at the last minute because he was not happy with his bride’s high-school marks. However, the bride’s family has an altogether different narrative as to why the groom did not marry, and theirs is a much more serious concern!
The news has surfaced from the Tirwa area in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. The Roka or engagement ceremony of the couple took place in December, last year in which the bride’s father claimed to have spent nearly 60,000. But shockingly, the groom decided to cancel the wedding when he discovered that his would-be wife’s 12th marks were very poor and that he did not want to end up having a future with her.

However, the narrative put forth by the bride’s family is that the groom and his family broke off the ties because they could not fulfil the “Dowry” demands. As per the news, the bride’s father has also lodged a complaint against Sonu and his family on grounds of all the expenditures he had to incur for the Roka ceremony. The girl’s father claimed that he gave a gold ring worth 15,000 to the groom and also spent nearly 60,000 on all the arrangements. The matter is currently being tackled by the police and they are trying to settle things between the families.

Well, the reason for ending a marriage on the basis of marks, sounds lame, isn’t it? But the dowry does not. However, only a proper investigation of the matter will bring the truth to the forefront.
