In recent events, 34-year-old Sharmila Kushalappa, a software engineer, was found dead after a fire broke out at her flat in Subramanya layout on January 3. While many thought of it as a late-night fire accident due to a short circuit, it is now being reported as a murder case in East Bengaluru. Forensic examination revealed that she was suffocated to death and that the fire was set to destroy evidence.

What Happened

The victim came from Dakshina Kannada and was working for a reputed tech company. For the unversed, an 18-year-old PUC student from Viajpet, Kurai, was also arrested in connection, as he lived with his single mother right next door. As per reports, on the day of the incident, he allegedly entered Sharmila’s flat through a sliding window at 9 PM and allegedly demanded s*xual favours and killed her when she denied.

The police reported that the accused allegedly pinned her down while covering her mouth and nose. He later picked her clothes and other items from the room, put them on the bed, and set them on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. This was followed by his fleeing the flat with the victim’s phone. He is also accused of setting the apartment on fire after the murder.
