Tarun Tahiliani Responds To Backlash On Paris Olympic Outfits For Indian Athletes: “It’s Not Couture Show”

On one hand, India is currently celebrating its first medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024 but the disappointment around the outfits designed for the athletes is still prevalent. Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani received a lot of backlash for the design, print, and overall look of the outfits. The designer has finally responded to the criticism and stood firm in supporting the final product by stating that the costume was made in adherence with the rule put out by the Olympic committee.
What Did Tarun Tahiliani Say On The Controversy?
Finally, the well-known designer Tarun Tahiliani broke his silence on the harsh criticism his designs have received. The designer spoke to NDTV and justified his decision to go ahead with the outfits for Team India at the Paris Olympics 2024. Tarun Tahiliani stated that he and his team strictly followed the rules laid out by the Olympic Committee. He further added that the outfit sits well with what Indians wear and stated that the Paris Olympics is not meant to be a couture show. Tarun Tahiliani revealed that there were some last-minute changes made to the designs and that his team only had three weeks to design 300 outfits. Commenting on the design and colour, he said that the motive was to make the outfits stand out in terms of reflecting the Indian tricolour from a distance, and clarified that handloom was impossible within the time they had. Tarun Tahiliani also highlighted that traditional elements were incorporated in the outfit and he gave the example of brocade shoes from Banaras.
Recently, badminton player Jwala Gutta also bashed the outfit and said that she was highly disappointed with the shabby fits.
