It’s difficult to scroll through the horrifying crimes against women that are on the rise in our country. The recent gang-r*pe case of a 16-year-old in the National Capital is proof that nothing has really changed after the Nirbhaya case. There is outrage in the country, and women want safety! The Supreme Court has now taken suo motu cognisance of this case and the terrifying gang-r*pe incident in a Delhi park. Here’s what the Supreme Court highlighted.
Supreme Court On Delhi Gang R*pe Cases
The bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice K Vinod Chandran viewed the Delhi gang-r*pe cases as distressing and highlighted the recurring nature of this horrifying crime. The bench also asked to ‘fix accountability,’ calling it a ‘systematic failure’ of law enforcement that is unable to provide basic safety standards to its citizens. The Supreme Court further stressed the lack of basic amenities at public places and parks, like lack of proper lighting, poor surveillance and other administrative facilities that have compromised safety. The bench also remarked that the cases brought back the ‘painful memories’ of the Nirbhaya case that happened in 2012.
The Supreme Court has strictly asked the authorities to be more vigilant to fight these social evils instead of just showing solidarity without accountability, as per the news reports.
The two cases of Delhi gang-r*pe have been haunting the nation. In one incident, a 16-year-old was assaulted by a driver and conductor in a moving bus. They allegedly offered help to the girl who reportedly got off at the wrong stop. In another incident, three men posing as police officers threatened and assaulted a minor who had visited the park with her friend. The three men in this case have been arrested.
