Manipur Violence: Supreme Court Constitutes All-Women Committee Of Former Judges To Supervise Probe, Relief Work

The ethnic violence in Manipur has left the state in shambles and the Supreme Court is currently hearing 10 petitions related to the situation seeking relief as well as a court-monitored probe into the Manipur situation among other things. On Monday, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that it will constitute an all-women’s committee of retired High Court judges to oversee the investigation, relief, rehabilitation and other issues pertaining to Manipur violence.
The Supreme Court, on Monday, proposed a three-member panel of former Chief Justice of J&K High Court Justice Gita Mittal, former Bombay HC Judge Justice Shalini Joshi and former Delhi HC judge Justice Asha Menon to oversee the probe into the Manipur violence as well as other issue related to ethnic violence in the state. The Top Court said that it aims to restore the confidence people have in the rule of law.
Dy National security advisor, ex-Mumbai top cop & ex-Maharashtra DIG Dattatray Padsalgikar will oversee the CBI (11 cases minimum) & Manipur police (42 SITs) probe in the #ManipurViolence, SC said.
Padsalgikar will report to the SC on the status of the probe.

The ex-Maharasthra DGP Dattatrey Padsalgikar has been appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the police probe into the cases related to ethnic violence in Manipur. The Top Court propose that 5 to 6 SP rank officers from different states be included in the CBI investigation team that will probe the 11 rape and sexual assault cases filed in Manipur amidst the ethnic violence. This includes the FIR filed in the case of the viral video of two Manipur women paraded naked.

A total of 42 SITs will be investigating the cases that haven’t been transferred to the CBI and the Apex Court proposed that the SITs be supervised by DIG rank officers from other states with one officer overseeing 6 SITs. This comes after Central Government asked the Supreme Court to transfer the FIR related to violence against women and children amid Manipur violence to CBI. Out of a total of 6,523 FIRs of Manipur violence, 11 such FIR have been filed.
