All We Know About Supreme Court’s Verdict On Stray Dogs In Delhi

There have been a lot of discussions around stray dogs, with some questioning their potential threat to society and humans. Many people also raised issues with activists feeding the stray dogs, following some attacks on humans and kids. Now, the Supreme Court has passed some decisions in this suo motu case, and has directed the shifting of stray dogs from the streets to shelter homes. This decision has received widespread criticism too. Read on for more about it.

What Is The Supreme Court Verdict On Stray Dogs?

The Supreme Court bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan addressed the case of stray dogs and their threat to infants and children. In its verdict, the bench ruled that the kids should have the liberty to walk around freely, and therefore they directed they removal of all the stray dogs from the streets.

On August 11, Monday, the SC ordered the authorities in Delhi to remove all the stray dogs from the streets and shift them into shelter homes. As per a Live law report, the court strictly ordered that it would entertain any kind of obstruction during the process and individuals would face legal consequences. The court has asked the authorities to form a team, and this would apply in Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad.

The court has given the authorities 8 weeks time to complete the process. The SC also found the suggestion of bringing back sterilised dogs back to the streets as absurd. The have asked for immediate steps to be taken, and the first one is too remove the stray dogs from the streets as soon as possible.

As per the ruling, the shelter homes will also have CCTV cameras to a record of no shelter dog being left outside again. As per the reports, the court declined to entertain any kind of intervention in this ruling and it considered it a matter of Public Interest.

The next hearing will happen in 6 weeks and the SC has also also sought reports on the same in the next hearing.
