Spain’s Equality Ministry Initiates System To Let Rape Survivors Track Released Sex Offenders

Sexual harassments and rapes are pathetic crimes that many women around the globe are subjected to. After a point, the convicted rapists are also released on various grounds, like what happened with Bilkis Bano’s rapists. However, to ensure the safety of victims in such cases, Spain has introduced a new system in which rape victims can put in requests to track their sex offenders after their release. But isn’t this a problematic one too?

In 2022, there was a law passed by the Spain Government after which some 133 rapists and sex offenders were released from jail. So basically, the new system has been brought in to rectify the mistake that has been made with last year’s law. The new system that was announced by Spain’s Equality Minister, Irene Montero, will give the victim access to their offender’s movements. She firstly condemned the decision to release those hundreds of rapists, and further added that post this the courts will accept requests from victims to track offenders. This tracking will be maintained by a GPS band that every released sex offender will wear. As per the news, the Spanish security forces will also have access to it, and in case of any breach within 500 metres of the victim’s location, the authorities will be notified. The security forces will immediately reach the victim’s place for protection.

Actually, this GPS tracking is not new in the country. It was introduced in 2009 for the protection of women against domestic violence. Many incidents were reported after this, as per the news.

Well, this might be a good move, but also raises concerns over its implementation. First of all, the fact that sex offenders are released even after committing such serious crimes is very problematic. Also, the authorities cannot deny the fact that victims will be in constant fear of their rapists roaming free in the area. The new system is clearly introduced to provide relief to the victims, but I wonder if that will really work out.
