Twitter Lashes Out At Smriti Irani For Opposing Paid Period Leaves: “Our WCD Minister Lacks Empathy, Understanding”
Do you agree?

It’s honestly very sad to see or hear insensitive or ignorant comments about women’s issues from a woman. We just saw a recent example of it when Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani spoke on paid menstrual leaves in India and said period is not a handicap that needs it. Well, her statement sparked angry reactions on Twitter, especially from women. Many users slammed the BJP minister for this ignorant statement and that too from a woman.
The Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani was addressing the menstrual hygiene questions by a RJD Minister. During this speech, she blatantly ignored seeing period as a problem that required paid leaves at workplaces. In one of her earlier statements, she also stated that there are no proposals with the government to make paid period leaves mandatory. Her reactions and statements have left many women shocked and furious on social media. They expressed their opinions on Twitter and bashed the minister for it. A Twitter user wrote, “She is a woman?”
Another user reminded her of the responsibilities she holds towards maintaining menstrual hygiene in schools and colleges. Some people also called the statement “Stupid” whereas others believe that her statements proved “Aurat hi aurat ki dushman hoti hai.”
ARE YOU IN REAL?
Aurat hi aurat ki dushman🙌(You proved)
Does she even know the impact of mensuration on women’s work effectively?

One Twitter shed light on how Smriti Irani ignored the fact that the experience of menstruation cycles differs for every woman. The user wrote empathy is not the strongest point of the Women and Child Development Minister.
Menstruation not handicap, no need for ‘paid leave’ policy: Minister #SmritiIrani
Every woman’s menstrual cycle is different. So many complications for so many. No surprise she’d ignore that. Empathy is not Minister of Women and Child Development’s strong point.

Unfortunately, @smritiirani is our Women & Child development minister.
Discussing menstruation aims to recognize unique challenges without labeling it as a handicap. It acknowledges potential discomfort impacting well-being and productivity. pic.twitter.com/aURvydCzj9

Another user pointed out that the laws allow maternity and paternity leaves in the country which are also a natural process in a couple’s life, and not a handicap. They questioned why Smriti Irani failed to understand a woman’s pain during periods before making such comparisons.
I feel sorry for this lady @smritiirani, who I still is menstruating as said in the Parliament by her but doesn’t understand the pain few women go through during menses.
We do have maternity & paternity leave which is also not handicap & a natural process in a couples life.— Dr. Anjali Hemant Nimbalkar (@DrAnjaliTai) December 14, 2023
Many other Twitter users slammed the BJP minister’s comment and women felt disappointed with her POV on menstruation and paid leaves. Check out the reactions.
