The horrifying video of women in Manipur being paraded naked and gang-raped has caused an uproar in the country and now, in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. During the Question House in the Parliament on Wednesday, Congress leader Dr Amee Yajnik demanded women cabinet ministers speak out on the Manipur violence. Reacting to the comment, BJP leader and Union Minister for Women and Child Developments, Smriti Irani lashed out at the opposition while highlighting that the women ministers have spoken up about the issue while dating the opposition to discuss the issue of crimes against women in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Bihar as well as Congress-led states.
When Congress’ Dr Amee Yajnik questioned if the women minister are going to speak about the Manipur violence and discuss it, Union Minister Smriti Irani raised strong objections to the questions and tore into the opposition. Enraged by the question the BJP leader lashed out at the opposition for raising the issues and said that women ministers and politicians have spoken not just about the Manipur violence but also about crimes against women in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Bihar as well. She then questioned when will the opposition have the courage to discuss Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and the shocking red diary bribery scandal and “how women are raped in Congress-ruled states!”

Earlier, Smriti Irani had accused Congress of wanting to hide facts about the Manipur violence and stated that Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to members of the opposition to discuss Manipur violence as he wishes to highlight some facts but the opposition is not allowing the facts to come to light. She further accused Congress of politicising crimes against women to settle political scores.

This came hours after a stand-off between political parties during the Monsoon Session proceeding of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were halted due to a ruckus in the Parliament after the opposition party indulged in sloganeering while demanding a statement from PM Modi during the session. Ever since the Monsoon Session of Parliament began on July 20, there has been severe disruption due to the conflict over the Manipur violence.
It’s truly sad how our political leaders are spending their time protesting and bickering over who said what and who didn’t say what in the Manipur violence as well as the crimes against women in other states instead of taking action against it. The videos from the Monsoon Session of the Parliament are proof that so many of our leaders are using this time to create a ruckus over the issue for political gains. And this comes only after the video of the Manipur incident went viral. Had that not happened, would our leaders ever even talk about the shocking crimes against women? I think not!
