THIS Is How Internet’s Tone Deaf Response To Sister Hong Scandal Shows Double Standards Against Male Abuse Victims

Here's why the jokes about the Sister Hong case are not funny.

THIS Is How Internet’s Tone Deaf Response To Sister Hong Scandal Shows Double Standards Against Male Abuse Victims

Sister Hong is a Chinese man who cross-dressed as a woman and lured reportedly thousands of men into having s*x with him. After inviting these men into his room, he used to film them and upload the videos on an online paid website. What he did not disclose to the victims was that he was actually a man and that they were being filmed. Sister Hong allegedly posted 1000+ videos with men without their knowledge. The case, however, has widely turned into a meme, with the victims of Sister Hong being the butt of the joke.

Double Standards Against Male Victims In The Sister Hong Case

From viral Cosplays to TikToks glamorising Sister Hong’s persona, social media has turned mass non-consensual porn into the internet’s biggest joke. Some even argue that the men deserved it, as many of them are believed to be in committed relationships. However, this points to the conversation that even if someone has a partner and is guilty of infidelity, do they deserve to have their privacy breached like this? Not only the videos, but these victims have also been exposed to HIV. Authorities report that some of Sister Hong’s victims have contracted HIV after sleeping with him.

This attitude towards Sister Hong’s victims also exposes the double standards that men are subjected to, especially by other men. Most of the memes and trolling that is done on social media is notable by men themselves; they call these victims dumb and stupid for falling for Hong’s trap.

Critising the victims for being gross or desperate reinforces the toxic stereotypes and completely dismisses their trauma. And the entire case also reeks of homophobia as this is turnt into a gotcha moment to shame men sleeping with other men. There is nothing comedic or iconic about the s*x scandal. It is time that the internet stopped laughing and held abusers accountable for their actions, regardless of who the victim is.
