Kunal Kamra’s Joke Leads To Shiv Sena Vandalising Venue In Mumbai, Comedy Club Decides To Shut Down!

In today’s time, there has been constant scrutiny and moral policing against standup comedians and their jokes. After Ranveer Allahabadia’s controversy, standup comedian Kunal Kamra is now making headlines. His joke on Minister Eknath Shinde did not sit well with the Shiv Sena workers who in turn vandalised the venue where the show took place. The popular comedy club has now issued an official statement on the matter and has decided to shut down the venue. Read on for more.

What Is The Matter?

Standup comedian Kunal Kamra recently released his new show titled ‘Naya Bharat’ which was shot at the famous comedy club, The Habitat in Mumbai. During a segment of the show, Kunal Kamra spoke about the politics in Maharashtra, the NCP and BJP parties, and also took a strong jibe at minister Eknath Shinde. He also without mentioning any names, called the minister ‘gaddar‘ (traitor).

The joke did not sit well with the Shiv Sena workers and many of their youth members vandalised the venue in Mumbai. The police have also registered a case against the Shiv Sena general secretary Rahool Kanal and other 19 men. The complaint has been registered under the various sections of the Maharashtra Police Act and sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Official Statement From The Comedy Club

The official venue, The Habitat where Kunal Kamra’s show was shot has put out an official statement on the matter. They have expressed deep hurt by the act of vandalism by the Shiv Sena workers, and have strongly stated that they should not be held responsible for an artist’s views and ideologies. The comedy club further mentioned giving a neutral platform to the artists where they could fearlessly keep their opinions. The comedy club further stated that they would shut down the venue until they came up with a solution to this problem. They also called artists, audience and stakeholders to share their respective views on the same.
