In a recent turn of events, Shashi Tharoor found himself in the midst of a controversy after many AI-generated videos of him allegedly praising Pakistan and making politically sensitive statements went viral. This caused havoc on social media, after which Justice Mini Pushkarna issued summons to platforms like X (Previously Twitter), and Meta Platforms while hearing the plea. The court also stated that it may pass a temporary order in his favour.

Shahi Tharoor’s lawyer, Senior Advocate Amit Sibal, argued that unknown pages were constantly releasing fake videos with the Congress MP’s voice and personality traits through AI. He stated that such content had harmed Tharoor’s reputation and public image. As per the plea, the fake videos falsely portray him making remarks in support of Pakistan. Sibal further stated that these videos could also damage India’s international standing and may be misused by foreign actors.
Reportedly, many URLs carrying this deepfake content had been taken down after the complaints were filed under the IT rules with the police. But the fake videos continued to be reposted across many social media platforms. Mtea’s counsel further informed the court that the objectionable Instagram content had already been blocked earlier in the day. Shashi Tharoor further alleged in his petition that malicious content started around March 2026 during the Kerala Assembly election campaign period.
The plea also stated that the AI tools were used to promote these videos by cloning his face, voice, vocabulary, and personality traits. The petition argued that unauthorised use of his likeness violated his personality rights. Many other celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Sudhir Chaudhary, Raj Shamani, and Pawan Kalyan have previously moved the Delhi HC seeking protection against misuse of their personality rights through AI-generated content.
