The horrifying RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor left the county in shock. The Sealdah court in Kolkata finally passed a verdict on January 20, Monday and sentenced the culprit to life imprisonment, despite the prosecution asking for the death penalty in this case. However, in the latest updates on the news, the West Bengal government has got permission from the Calcutta High Court to appeal for a death case in this case. Read on to know more.

Calcutta High Court Approves Of WB Government’s Request To Appeal For Death Penalty!

On January 21, the West Bengal Government led by Mamata Banerjee got the approval to make the death penalty appeal in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. Advocate General Kishor Datta represented the West Bengal Government and his request was heard by a bench consisting of Justice Debangsu Basak. The Calcutta High Court granted permission to appeal for the Death Penalty.

For the unversed, the Sealdah Court did not grant capital punishment to the victim Sanjay Roy as they did not consider the case to be ‘rarest of the rare case’. Many people were not happy with the court’s decision. However, till the end, Sanjay Roy did not accept the charges and pleaded non-guilty. In his statement, the culprit said that he was being framed and had not committed the crime.

The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder happened in August 2024. The bone-chilling case raised questioned on the women’s safety concerns in the country. And more importantly, it raised concerns over the pathetic working conditions for the doctors. Many protests happened in West Bengal and across the country.
