A young classical Bharatnatyam dancer recently made history by performing nonstop for an entire week! Mangaluru’s Remona Evette Pereira set a new world record by dancing for 170 hours without taking any break. Her performance began on July 21 and went on till July 28. Remona has officially been recognised by the Golden Book of World Records and has become the first classical dancer to have been continuously for such a long duration. Read on to know more.
Who Is Remona Evette Pereira, Bharatnatyam Dancer
Remona Evette Pereira is a 20-year-old BA student from St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. Starting on 21 July at 10 a.m., she danced non-stop until 28 July at noon, taking a 15-minute break every three hours. The dancer has been training for 13 years under her teacher, Guru Sri Vidya. During her journey, Remona Evette Pereira was supported endlessly by her mother, Gladis Pereira and her closely knit team of friends.
Remona’s college, St Aloysius’ Vice Chancellor Fr. Praveen Martis also provided the dancer with comprehensive support, from providing medical assistance to setting up arrangements where the dancer can rest during her break time. Apart from Bharatnatyam, Remona Evette Pereira is also proficient in semi-classical, western, and contemporary dances. She has previously earned spots in other such prestigious record books like the India Book of Records and the Golden Book of Records, London.
The Golden Book of World Records formally recognised this Bharatnatyam marathon performance, which shattered the previous record of 127 hours. Sudhir Jagtap held the previous record. Remona Evette Pereira prayed to Lord Ganesha at the start of her performance and paid respect to Goddess Durga at the end. Her face stayed expressive throughout her dance, which combined precise footwork with hand or mudra gestures.

“Seeing my daughter’s dream come true fills me with pride. Gladis Celine, Ramona’s mother, said, “Her efforts have paid off, and I couldn’t have wished for anything better for her.” She went on to say that she supported her daughter at every turn.
