Japanese Tourists Allegedly Harassed At Dashashwamedh Ghat In Varanasi, Police Launch Inquiry

Recent social media posts of a video showing a group of Japanese tourists being harassed by some locals at Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi have resulted in widespread anger. The incident allegedly occurred on Christmas Day, December 25, when a group of Japanese tourists visited the ghat to take a dip in the Ganges River. As reports and images reveal, some onlookers started accusing the tourists of their inappropriate acts, like urinating in the river; however, they did not have evidence to support these claims.

In this video, it is possible to notice several Japanese tourists standing calmly amidst locals, who are engaged in a loud argument with the tourists. It appears as if the tourists are quite shaken and are trying to appease the locals by apologising with folded hands. However, this notwithstanding, they continue to face an argument, and it is possible to notice them sitting on the steps of a ghat while some of the locals are shouting at them.

It was also alleged that some objections were raised concerning the Japanese tourists donning Santa Claus caps at the ghat itself, with some locals expressing the view that it was inappropriate to wear them at the ghat.

Even as the debate heated up, a larger crowd is said to have assembled, adding to the pressure on the foreigners. According to police authorities, no official complaint was lodged by either party during the incident. However, after the video appeared on social media and went viral, the issue came to the notice of the authorities, and an investigation was launched.
