Pope Francis Supports LGBTQ+ Community, Calls Criminalising Same-Sex Relationships A “Sin”

The fight for the LGBTQ+ community to get their basic freedom of living and marrying partners of their choice still has a long way to go. However, the change is evident when people from different mindsets and eras also come forward to show their support for this community. And recently, the leader of the  Catholic Church, Pope Francis spoke for the marital rights of homosexuals. He was also supported by other leaders and priests of the church.

Pope Francis recently took a short trip to South Sudan. He interacted with the media and answered their questions about the criminalisation of homosexuality in some countries. Pope Francis outrightly rejected the idea of it and even called it to be a “Sin”. Pope Francis also said that people who love someone from the same gender are loved by the almighty. He also clarified that the churches do not approve of same-sex marriages. However, as per his personal opinion Pope Francis believed that the law should not go against their union and ban them from living with partners of their choice irrespective of gender.

Pope Francis’s opinion was also supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury and moderator of the Church of Scotland, as per the news.

Many countries have decriminalised homosexual relationships, and India is on that list after the abolition of Section 377 in 2018. However, marriages are still not permitted in many of these countries, and only 32 countries have till now allowed same-sex marriages as per data.

But religious leaders breaking from the shackles of orthodox ideas and supporting the change in this new era is really refreshing to see. Pope Francis’s speech on the rights of homosexuals is surely big, and we need more powerful leaders to speak against the criminalisation of homosexual relationships to make the voices of LGBTQ+ community stronger.
