Picture Sparks Controversy
In a picture that surfaced on Twitter, Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, Rupali Chakankar was allegedly seen with a self-proclaimed Godman and astrologer Ashok Kharat. Many ministers and social media users have strongly reacted to the photo and have asked for her resignation.
Who is Ashok Kharat?
As per an NDTV report, Ashok Kharat was arrested on Wednesday, and according the police statement, the arrest was made on accusation of r*ping a 35-year-old woman over three years under the pretext of being an astrologer and religious guide. He used his social-political connections to win the trust of women, and then assault them, as per the police. During the investigation, around 58 disturbing video clips were also found that were stored on a pen drive. The police said that he has been charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections and the investigation in currently ongoing. He was also a former Merchant Navy officer and later a the chairperson of Shree Ishaneshwar Mahadev Temple Trust
Rupali Chakankar has denied the allegations. In a tweet, she wrote that many people got associated with the trust only bacause of the social work, and she further denied having any knowledge about Kharat’s personal life and the allegations. She showed full faith in the police and hoped that they would carry a fair trial.
