Boxer Mary Kom To Head Oversight Committee For WFI After Sexual Harassment Allegations

The WFI sexual harassment case by wrestler, Vinesh Phogat grabbed the country’s attention towards the injustices women have to face in the professional world. Vinesh Phogat staged a sit-in protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and many wrestlers joined the cause too. The protest ended on Saturday, January 21, after some promises were made by the government regarding the sexual allegation case. Post this, a committee has been formed to keep a check on all the day-to-day workings of the WFI and it will be headed by renowned boxer, Mary Kom.

The government announced this committee solely with the purpose to avoid any loopholes or biases in the WFI’s workings. The oversight committee headed by Mary Kom will be responsible for keeping an eye on the everyday tasks carried out by the Wrestlers Federation of India, and this will not be done by WFI itself. The committee also has other members from the sports fraternity, like Yogeshwar Dutt, and Tripti Murigunde. It is clearly made to avoid any kind of corruption. As per the news, it is also reported that the government has given its word to the wrestlers that the investigation of WFI’s chief Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan’s sexual harassment charges will also also be completed in four weeks. The protest against sexual harassment charges by the protestor also led to the removal of WFI’s Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar.

Vinesh Phogat, along with some thirty other wrestlers started this protest on January 18. She accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of mentally harassing her after the Tokyo Olympics. However, the alleged accused denied all such allegations and said that there is no question of him resigning from office. This protest saw the involvement of many women leaders, who raised their voices against the harassment charges and demanded an immediate probe into the case.

Now, that the government has promised the wrestlers of a fast-track investigation on this case, we hope that they stick to their words. The new committee has also been formed to avoid such mishaps in the future, but what matters here is the implementation of it, and only time will tell how that goes.
