About The IndiGo Airline Crisis

One of the largest airlines in India, IndiGo, cancelled more than 550 flights, resulting in the highest single-day disruption in its 20-year history. Problems such as technical issues, crew shortage, and scheduling failures created chaos for a fourth straight day. As per PTI, about 118 cancellations in the city of Mumbai, 100 in Bengaluru, 75 in Hyderabad, 35 in Kolkata, 26 in Chennai, with additional crises in cities like Bhopal. The city of Goa alone saw 14 cancellations and delays of 25 flights over the course of 3 hours, leaving weekend-bound residents and tourists stranded.

Hundreds of passengers were left with unclear departure times due to repeated rescheduling and insufficient notifications. Among the most notable casualties were Mumbai City FC, who spent over 10 hours at the airport before arriving in Goa on Thursday morning for their Super Cup quarterfinal. Travellers from different regions of Bengaluru, including Chintamani in Chikkaballapur district, claimed they were forced to wait for hours without “proper meals.” Many people were travelling for employment, tourism, or personal reasons.

Stranded customers reported that the airline provided reimbursements rather than rescheduling, but alternative flights to Bengaluru cost over ₹30,000, making them unaffordable for many middle-class visitors. The airline acknowledged miscalculating staffing requirements following recent revisions to night-duty standards, and it has since temporarily reversed those rules to relieve strain on crew scheduling. The Civil Aviation Ministry and the DGCA summoned senior IndiGo executives, seeking answers and demanding prompt corrective action.

The regulator is keeping an eye on the issue as one of the most severe flight disruptions in recent years leaves hundreds stranded across the country, with passengers demanding accountability and a quick resolution from the airline.
