Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway's eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby has been formally charged with various criminal offences!

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway’s eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby has been formally charged with various criminal offences, just short of one year since his arrest. The 27-year-old was arrested in August 2024 and now stands charged with 32 offenses including rape, domestic violence, and assault, CBS and Reuters reported.
Norway Crown Princess’s Son Accused Of Rape
Marius Borg Høiby, Princess Mette-Marit’s son from her previous relationship to Crown Prince Haakon, was originally accused of beating and psychologically abusing a 20-year-old woman. Norwegian magazine Se og Hør first reported the arrest last year, detailing that investigators thought some of the assaults were also videotaped.
On Monday, the prosecutors confirmed the broad indictment that contains one charge of rape by intercourse and three charges of rape by other means, in addition to multiple counts of violence and harassment. Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo said to local media that the maximum penalty for these acts could result in a decade behind bars. He emphasized that Høiby’s royal relationship would not come into play when the case is processed, stating he would be treated the same as any other citizen.
Høiby, who holds no official position in the royal household and is not in the line of succession, had mostly avoided public life in 2017. The accusations have been a global story, however, because of his royal association.
His attorney, Christian Sekulic, said that although Høiby will plead guilty to some lesser charges, he strongly denies the most severe allegations, such as rape and domestic violence. The defence argues that some aspects of the case have been grossly exaggerated or misrepresented.
Since his arrest last year, Høiby was kept in detention for approximately 30 hours before being released. The trial should examine not just the facts of the alleged attacks but also how the case would affect Norway’s royal family.
If found guilty, Høiby faces a maximum of ten years in prison. For the time being, the trial is one of the most prominent in Norway in recent history, as much for the severity of the charges as for its royal connections.
