A nurse from Kerala named Nimisha Priya has been making headlines internationally after she was sentenced to death in Yemen. Priya moved to Yemen in 2008 for better employment opportunities and even started her own clinic in the country’s capital, Sanaa. The nurse has been accused of murdering her business partner by the Yemeni authorities and has been sentenced to death for it. Read on to know more.
Who Is Nimisha Priya?
Nimisha Priya is a 38-year-old nurse hailing from Kerala’s Palakkad district. She emigrated to Yemen in 2008 and established her own clinic in the country’s capital city, Sanaa. She had reportedly opened the clinic with her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdol Mehdi.
In July 2017, Nimisha Priya was accused of murdering Talal and reports claim that she had injected him with ketamine. Her motive was stated as trying to escape from Talal’s alleged harassment and recovering her passport from him. Talal Abdol Mehdi later passed away due to an overdose.
Following Mehdi’s death, his body was dismembered and disposed of in a water tank. Nimisha Priya was arrested near the Yemen-Saudi border while trying to flee. After initially being sentenced to death, on Tuesday, Nimisha Priya’s execution has been postponed.
This incident has sparked intense diplomatic conversations between India and Yemen. Religious negotiations Kerala’s Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar have played a crucial role in delaying the execution.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, called the execution’s postponement hopeful and consoling. According to him, Nimisha Priya now has additional time to appeal the death sentence.
