A gruesome dowry violence case has shaken the entire nation. A 30-year-old woman, Nikki Bhati, was allegedly tortured and burnt alive by her husband, Vipin Bhati, and his family members over dowry demands in Noida. The killing, which took place in the presence of her young son and sister, has outraged Uttar Pradesh. The police have arrested three family members so far. Read on to know more about the case.
Nikki Bhati Burnt Alive By Husband Vipin Over Dowry Demands In Noida
As per police reports, Nikki was undergoing harassment for dowry since her marriage to Vipin in 2016. Despite the husband’s repeated demands being met by her family, including a Mahindra Scorpio SUV, a Bullet bike, and almost 30 tolas (around 300 grams) of gold, the torture continued. Her in-laws had allegedly insisted on being gifted a Scorpio and two Swift Dzire cars at the time of marriage talks, and various other gifts were given later in the marriage.
Last Thursday, her husband reportedly assaulted Nikki, pulled out of her home by her hair, and set her on fire in front of witnesses. Videos from the incident depict her being beaten up before she was doused with flammable liquid and subsequently set on fire. She died due to serious burn injuries while being taken to a Delhi hospital.
Her six-year-old son was present during the incident and told police that his father and grandparents poured a substance on his mother before igniting it with a lighter. The attack was also witnessed by Nikki’s sister, who had been married into the same family.
Police Have Arrested Three Family Members
After killing his wife, Vipin Bhati tried to flee from police custody. He allegedly wrestled an officer’s gun and tried to escape during a confrontation. He was shot in the leg and admitted to Greater Noida hospital. Police also found bottles of thinner used to attempt to burn Nikki.

The case has reopened controversy surrounding dowry violence in India, where even after rigid legislation, women are subjected to harassment and death at the hands of killers linked to dowry demands. Along with Vipin, the police have also arrested Nikki’s mother-in-law and brother-in-law. Further investigation is currently ongoing. This is a developing story.
