She said that she was happy with the performance and she tried her best to get India the gold medal. She said that she managed this without getting sufficient time to recover from her previous injury. The weightlifter also revealed that it was her third day of periods and second day in Tokyo which also affected her strength.
After the two phases of competition, Channu’s final score was 199 kg, which was 3 kg less than her winning performance of 202 kg which earned her a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Her weight at the 2020 Asian Championship is her personal best, which is 205 kg. In the snatch round, Mirabai Chanu lifted 85 kg on her first try and succeeded. Her second effort at 88 kg, regrettably, did not work out. Mirabai changed her second attempt weight from the initial 86 kg to 88 kg just before her turn.
In the snatch round final, Mirabai Channu matched both her personal best and the 88kg national record. But Thai weightlifter Surodchana Khambao also hit the same weight, so at the end of the snatch round, both competitors shared third place. Not to be disheartened, she tried the same weight again and succeeded in lifting it, tying for second place with Hou Zhihui. But Surodchana made it to 200 kg with a successful lift of 112 kg on her second try, knocking Mirabai out in fourth place. The 29-year-old Indian weightlifter lost out on a good opportunity on her first try since she couldn’t finish her final lift, which left her with a total of 199 kg.
