Why Was India’s Pahalgam Terror Retaliation Attack Named Operation Sindoor?

Two weeks after a deadly terror attack was carried out against tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, claiming the lives of 26 civilians, India has retaliated. Last night, the Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes on 9 specific terror bases in Pakistan and PoK, which were used to plan and launch attacks against India. The Indian army has named the attack Operation Sindoor, and this is the symbolic message behind it.

Significance of the name

Sindoor in Hindi means vermilion, which Hindu women put on their head as a symbol of marriage. The name of the operation symbolises the loss of these women, whose partners were tragically killed right in front of their eyes. An image released by the Indian Army has ‘Operation Sindoor’ written in block letters. One ‘O’ in the word Sindoor is a bowl of spilled vermilion.  Furthermore, the name stands to humanise all the victims of the tragedy and immortalise them. Making sure that their sacrifices are remembered.

Following the attack, Minister of External Affairs of India, S. Jaishankar took to X posting a picture with the caption, “The world must show zero tolerance for terrorism.” According to reports from news agencies, it was Narendra Modi who was responsible for naming the operation.
