A bizarre and harrowing news is coming out of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, where a man named Shakeel fell in love with his son’s to-be bride during their house visits and married her. What’s more strange is that the man already had six kids of his own and when his current wife objected to Shakeel’s marriage with his son’s fiancée, he beat her up.
Man Marries His Son’s Fiancée In Rampur
Shakeel had set up his minor son’s marriage to the woman. He then started talking to her over the phone frequently, alleged Shakeel’s wife, Shabana. She further says that she started having doubts about Shakeel and suspected that her husband may be having an affair with the same woman.
Later, Shabana caught Shakeel with the woman on two different occasions. She told the media that Shakeel used to video call her the entire day, and she, along with her son, collected evidence against Shakeel. Their 15-year-old son refused to marry the woman after he learnt about his father’s affair with her. He also alleges that his grandparents, Shakeel’s parents, knew about the affair and helped Shakeel marry the woman. Shakeel had left the house with Rs. 2 lakh and about 17 lakh grams of gold to marry the woman.

Not An Isolated Incident
However, this is not an isolated incident. In April, a woman in Uttar Pradesh eloped with her to-be son-in-law. The bride, Shivani, who was initially meant to marry the man, said that her mother, Anita, took about Rs 3.5 lakh cash and jewellery that the family owned. Shivani’s father, Jitendra Kumar, said that he had heard his wife talking to Shivani’s fiancé for long periods of time, but he did not say anything because their marriage was to take place soon. These cases reflect the problematic traditional family structures in rural Uttar Pradesh that enable such incidents from happening.
