Who Is Maithili Thakur, BJP Candidate Predicted To Become Bihar’s Youngest MLA?
Maithili Thakur is contesting for elections from Bihar's Alinagar.
Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur announced that she will be joining the political party BJP this year. Thakur contested for the currently ongoing Bihar elections from Alinagar. The 25-year-old is leading the polls, as she is ahead by 8,551 votes after 11 rounds of counting, according to data provided by the Election Commission of India. Read on to know more.
Who Is Maithili Thakur
Maithili Thakur is a 25-year-old singer popular for her folk songs. She is trained in Indian classical music as well as Maithili, Bhojpuri, devotional bhajans, and filmi-style songs.
Thakur hails from Benipatti in the Madhubani district of Bihar. She later moved to Dwarka, Delhi, along with her family, for musician training. Maithli’s father is a music teacher, and she learned the skill from both her father and grandfather.
She started gaining recognition in 2017 when Thakur participated in he reality singing show Rising Star India. Since then, MaithiliThakur has built a strong media presence on YouTube, where videos of her singing classical and folk songs have gained millions of views.
On 14 October 2025, Thakur formally joined the BJP and got a Ticket from the Alinagar Assembly constituency. Currently, she has taken a significant lead in votes over her opponent, Binod Mishra, the RJD candidate. If Maithli Maithili wins, she will become the youngest MLA from Bihar, as she turned 25 in July.
Talking about policies that she wants to advocate for the betterment of the state, Thakur said that she will change the name of the constituency from Alinagar to Sitanagar if she wins. The candidate has reiterated this promise in several interviews.

The results for the Bigar elections will be declared soon. The NDA is expected to emerge victorious with trends indicating a bigger win than what the exit polls predicted. While the ruling alliance is leading in more than 185 seats, the Mahagathbandhan is far behind, ahead in only 47 seats.
