Even with cold days and colder nights and a significant chance of rain, thousands of people from across the world are travelling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. People wanting to take a dip in the holy water is a universal message of unity and renewal. With millions of devotees coming through, this year’s Maha Kumbh is especially significant due to its alignment with rare celestial configurations that align once in 144 years.
Origins Of Maha Kumbh
Prayagraj is hosting this time’s Maha Kumbh Mela as many myths and theories about its origin exist. As with many Hinduism questions, the solutions are found in a mix of stories, history, and an ancient people’s continuing faith, which trusts as much in the generosity of invisible deities as in concrete life-givers such as rivers.
It goes back to the churning of the oceans by the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. To make sure the Asuras don’t get it, Indra’s son Jayant runs off with the pot along with the Sun, his son Shani, Brihaspati (the planet Jupiter), and the Moon go along to protect him and the pot. In the process, drops of Amrit fall at four places- Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
According to the mythology, Jayant ran for 12 straight days, and one day of the Devas is equal to one year of humans. This is why, the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years based on the relative positions of the sun, the moon, and Jupiter.
