Why The Louvre Museum Heist Has Become Internet’s Favourite Obsession

Some are calling it the heist of the century.

Why The Louvre Museum Heist Has Become Internet’s Favourite Obsession

The greatest heist of a generation might have just been conducted right before everyone’s life, and as expected, it has become quite the spectacle on the internet. While the authorities are actively looking for the thieves who broke into the world’s busiest museum, the Louvre, in broad daylight and managed to steal priceless artefacts in mere 10 minutes. Read on to know more.

About The Louvre Museum Height

Yes, you read that right. On October 19, a group of four thieves broke into the Louvre Museum during broad daylight, parked their truck out front with a retractable ladder outside of the museum’s opening, conducted the robbery and drove away on scooters. The odd way in which this heist has been conducted has fascinated many internet users, especially the comically hilarious scooter escape.

The thieves have reportedly cut into glass cases of the museum with an electric saw and made off with over $100 million worth of royal jewels from the 19th-century reign of Emperor Napoleon III. Authorities are trying to track down the jewels and catch the perpetrator; the Louvre’s management, on the other hand, is busy doing damage control.

Apparently, security had been a pressing issue at the museum for a while, and many had criticised the management for their light security. The museum’s director, Laurence des Cars, tried to offer her resignation, but Rachida Dati, the French government’s Culture Minister, refused it.

What The Internet Thinks

However, more than a crime, this event has gained popularity, cementing itself in pop culture. Memes, jokes, and parodies about the Louvre height started flooding the internet. Museum heists have always been seen as almost something cool; to successfully pull off something about the theatrics and dramatics of the crime holds the fascination of the people, leading to their romanticisation by many.

While the French authorities tie the Louvre museum heist to an organised crime syndicate, many view it as a revolt against the system that almost echoes the sentiment of eating the rich and giving to the poor. However, it is also important to note despite whatever narrative people believe in, the original motivations of the heist have not been revealed yet.
