Pune law student an a social media influencer, Sharmishta Panoli, was arrested by the Kolkata Police for alleged communal comments in a viral video. She was arrested from Haryana’s Gurugram by the Kolkata Police late Friday night and was then produced before court in the West Bengal city. In recent updates, Panoli has been detained to judicial custody till June 13 according to her lawyer. Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has stated that the influencer should be released immediately. Sharmishta Panoli was arrested on Friday for her remarks in the now-deleted video on Instagram. She also questioned Bollywood celebrities for being ‘silent’ during Operation Sindoor. Sharmishta Panoli has been charged with inciting animosity between different groups, malicious activities meant to offend religious emotions, intentional insult, and provoking breach of peace, according to PTI. Her advocate, Md Samimuddin, revealed that her bail application was moved before the court.

“The police custody prayer was sought by the prosecution, which was turned down and rejected. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody till 13th of June, 2025,” he stated.

What Did Kangana Ranaut Say?

On Saturday, May 31, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranuat took to her Instagram stories and commented on the controversy. She agreed that though Sharmishta used ‘unpleasant’ words, such words are common among youngsters today. According to Ranaut, Panoli’s apology should be enough and she should be released immediately without any harassment or bullying. Check out her statement here.
