Matcha, Labubus And Dubai Chocolate, Here’s How The Internet Is Pushing Overconsumption Culture On You

If you spoke the words Viral Labubu Dubai Matcha chocolate to someone a few months ago, they would have given you a very, very strange look. But right now, these terms are taking over everybody’s social media feeds. Labubus, Dubai chocolate and Matcha are 3 major trends of 2025, and interestingly, they are all tied to the rising consumerism that is taking over our present capitalist world. Read on to know more about this viral meme trend and whether we should be concerned about it.

The Matcha, Dubai Chocolate And Labubu Trend

Matcha beverages are all the hype these days, open your Instagram stories and you’ll see aesthetic snaps of the distinct green beverage on at least 2 people’s accounts. Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony. Excessive demand for the tea powder after going viral on the internet has even led to a global shortage of it.

We don’t need to explain to you what a Labubu is. If you don’t know what it is, then consider yourself blessed. Pop Mart’s mystery toy doll has become the fashion industry’s latest obsession and a class symbol. The rise of labubu dolls is surely an interesting one; the horrifying-looking dolls solely generated about $423 million in revenue for the company.

Dubai Chocolate is an amalgamation of kunafa, pistachio paste and chocolate. The chocolate also took over the internet, and sales for it increased significantly.

Sales are not the only thing that has risen about these three products, the memes are too! From 24 karat labubus to a matcha rave party, it’s all mind-boggling. The reason behind the popularity of this trend can be quite concerning, as it all boils down to consumerism. You don’t really need to buy every special edition of labubus, or drink the exclusive matcha flavours or that repulsive Dubai chocolate labubus shake.

Memes and trends come and die, but what makes this trend particularly harmful is its unsustainability. Counterfeit labubus are taking over the market, and when the trend eventually dies down, it will lead to significant waste generation. The hoarding or overpurchasing of matcha has effected the already limited struggling workforce of Japan, which is leading to exploitation. Even the Dubai chocolate has been found to contain unsafe levels of mycotoxins, unauthorised substances, and undeclared allergens, potentially posing risks to consumers, particularly those with allergies.
