Kolkata Nabanna Protest: West Bengal Governor reacts on the suppression of student protests!

A large number of protesters, mostly young people from Kolkata started the Nabanna Abhijan on Tuesday, August 27, afternoon from two different points in the city, calling for Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, to resign and for the perpetrators of the doctor’s rape and murder to be taken into custody. The rallyists said that the R G Kar tragedy, which provoked indignation across the country, was caused by the CM’s failure to protect women’s safety and security. The West Bengal Governor said that the situation is far from normal in the current situation.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday, August 27, stated that the state handled the crisis by using excessive force and coercive authority, disobeying the Supreme Court’s rulings that the state cannot use its power against peaceful protestors. He felt that it was a ghastly sight which was seen on the streets of Kolkata on Tuesday, the day of protest and that it could not be appreciated in any manner. “As Governor, I am watching, I have taken my inference.” He said while pointing out that he is having difficulties at the moment about making public decisions. He concluded by saying that because of how serious the situation is, everyone involved in public life feels compelled to band together and confront the government’s reckless actions. The circumstances are not typical at all.

Hundreds of people were marching towards the state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday, August 27, but the Kolkata police stopped them with water cannons and tear gas. When the demonstrators tore down the police barricades and flung stones at the security guards, Mamata Banerjee was in her secretariat office. According to one officer, intelligence reports indicated that some miscreants might attack police officers, so they sent out approximately one hundred people and anti-riot vehicles.
