Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder Case: 8 Important Statements Made By Supreme Court. Much-Needed!

The Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case was presented before the Supreme Court on August 20, Tuesday. The bench consisted of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The judges made some important statements regarding the case and also posed some questions related to the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College. Here are the remarks from SC judges.

1. Concerns Over Vicitm’s Pictures, Videos Shared On Social Media

CJI DY Chandrachud raised his concerns over the 31-year-old doctor’s pictures and videos going viral on the internet. The CJI stressed that it is an unlawful activity and expressed his anger over the insensitive handling of a doctor’s case who died so young.

2.10 Member Force For Making A Plan Of Action

The Supreme Court has asked for the formation of a 10-member force that will make recommendations for the safety and security measures of the doctors. They will take the responsibility of making a plan of action keeping in mind the violence against doctors, and safe and secure working conditions for the residents, non-resident doctors and interns.

3. Reveals Why SC Took Suo Moto Cognisance

The Supreme Court bench also stated that they took suo moto cognisance of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case because it highlighted some serious loopholes in the security measures and working conditions for doctors across the country.

4. Slams West Bengal Government

The SC bench also reminded the West Bengal government that they should not use their power on the protestors.

5. Statement On Vandalism, Bashes Kolkata Police

The Supreme Court bench also questioned how the mob entered RG Kar Medical College and vandalised the property. The SC slammed the Kolkata police for delaying the FIR filing process, and not being able to secure the crime scene.

6. “Cannot Wait For Another Rape”

The CJI noted that with the increase of women in the workforce, the nation cannot wait for more rape cases to happen to ensure safety on the ground. The bench also acknowledged the lack of strong laws to secure standard working conditions for doctors.

7. Requests Doctors To Resume Work

The Supreme Court bench also requested the doctors to resume their respective work as it was affecting the normal public.

8. Asks CBI To File A Status Report

The Supreme Court Bench has also asked the CBI to submit a status report on the case by August 22, Thursday.
