Junior doctors from several medical colleges held a rally at Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar on Monday, demanding the resignation of police commissioner Vineet Goyal for his failure to prevent vandalism at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 14. And while this happened, the Trinamool Congress has decided to ban three TV news channels for spreading anti-Bengal agenda-driven propaganda about the state administration.

Junior Doctor Rally

The participating doctors, who were stopped in front of police guardrails on BB Ganguly Street heading to Lalbazar, claimed that their march was peaceful and that representatives wanted to speak with the police commissioner. They, on the other hand, urged that the rally be permitted to proceed further towards the police headquarters, claiming that it had been stopped some distance from Lalbazar. The agitated junior physicians then squatted in the street, chanting slogans. The demonstrators carried a copy of a spine and red roses, claiming that they were to highlight the police force’s duty to protect citizens. They were also spotted waving the national flag and placards with slogans demanding justice and protection for everyone, especially physicians.

Some signs included a portrait of Goyal with wording demanding his resignation. The protesters also burnt an effigy of the police commissioner. The disgruntled physicians also chanted slogans, demanding severe punishment for the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar hospital. The doctors said that the police did not take appropriate procedures throughout their investigation into the young doctor’s rape murder on August 9, before the Calcutta High Court turned over the matter to the CBI. A significant number of police officers were positioned in the vicinity, and guardrails with chains and padlocks were erected on BB Ganguly Street to prevent the rally from reaching the police headquarters.

TMC To Boycott Three TV Channels

Amid indignation over the rape and death of a young doctor in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress has decided to boycott three TV news stations for spreading “anti-Bengal agenda-driven propaganda” against the state administration. According to TMC’s announcement, the party would not send any spokespersons to news debates on these television channels.

TMC said that AITC has decided to go to media channels such as ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV 9 due to their continuous anti-Bengal propaganda. They said that while they understand their pleas the landlords of Delhi, given the ongoing enforcement cases their companies are facing. They also requested Bengal folks to not be influenced by individuals who portray themselves as party supporters or sympathizers on these platforms during discussions or debates are not authorized by the party and do not represent our official stance.

TMC’s intention to boycott TV debates on specific networks followed a heated exchange of words between BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar during a debate. Dastidar referred to Paul, a fashion designer, as a saree-maker’ throughout the argument. The TMC leader also stated that medical students were “made to sit on laps” to pass during the CPM regime in Bengal, which generated controversy. Dastidar later issues an apology to X.
