3 senior Kolkata police officers including 2 ACPs suspended amidst the Kolkata rape and murder case

In the aftermath of the horrific rape and murder crime against a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata, three senior Kolkata Police officers including two assistant commissioners of police (ACP) have been suspended over vandalism in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last week. Days after the heinous crime against the trainee doctor in the seminar of the state-run hospital, a mob barged into its premises and completely erupted the emergency department, nursing station, and medical store.
Three Kolkata Police Officers Suspended
This act of vandalism took place at the state-run hospital amidst the midnight protests by women in Kolkata who were demanding justice for the deceased doctor. “Three officers have been suspended… Two are assistant police commissioners and one is an inspector.” This was told by an officer to PTI. The Kolkata police were criticised by the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court for not having control over the mob.
On Tuesday, August 20, the Supreme Court questioned the police on a list of questions including the delay in filing the initial information report, the delay in giving over the body to the victim’s family, and the inability to safeguard women and doctors during the mob attack. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the country would be denying the right to equality if women can’t go to work and be safe. The court also questioned how the police could allow criminals to access the hospital, which was a busy crime scene. They also pointed out that the body was handed over at 8:30 AM to the family for the funeral while the murder FIR was registered at 11:45 PM.
The doctor had gone to rest to the seminar hall to rest amid her 36-hour shift where she was brutally raped and murdered. A post-mortem report stated that she had 16 external and 9 internal injuries. It also confirmed signs of sexual assault. Doctors across the country have been denouncing the rape and murder. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered them to stop their protests and promised to take action on their demands.
