The rape and murder case of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata has shook the entire nation. Protesting for justice are doctors worldwide and the victim’s parents who have been going on strikes, demanding strict action against the rapist. The latest development in the case is probably the biggest of all. The Supreme Court has now taken the case into its own hands. Today, the Indian judiciary system announced that it was taking suo motu cognisance of the case.
What Is Suo Motu?
This Latin terminology, suo motu refers to “on its own motion,” and is a unique power vested in the Indian judiciary system that helps it take notice of a matter without receiving a formal petition or complaint.
This latest development in the case reveals that the Supreme Court has now taken up the case. As per the same, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear the matter on Tuesday. According to the reports, two lawyers from the Supreme Court on Thursday wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud requesting to take cognisance of the rape and murder case. After a failed investigation by the Kolkata Police, the case has now been transferred to CBI. The incident took place in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The main accused in the matter is a civic volunteer–Sanjay Roy.

The CBI has not only taken Roy under custody, performing psychoanalysis tests but has also been grilling RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former principal–Sandip Ghosh, who resigned from his position a few days after the incident took the spotlight. Well, we hope justice is served to the grieving family.
