Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder Case: 5 Major Key Takeaways From Supreme Court Hearing

The RG Kar Medical College case in Kolkata where a young trainee doctor was raped and brutally murdered reminded us of the grave women’s safety issues in the country, yet again! The Supreme Court took suo moto of the matter and another hearing was carried out by the bench today. Headed by CJI DY Chandrachud, the SC bench of three judges heard the case and made some important remarks on the investigation.
1. Supreme Court On CBI Investigation
In the last Supreme Court hearing, the bench called details from the CBI investigation ‘disturbing’. During the latest hearing, the CBI gave more updates about some substantial leads in the RG Kar College rape and murder case and the case of financial irregularities. The SC asked the CBI team to continue with the investigation and follow the leads that they got till now.
2. Expand The Case
CJI DY Chandrachud highlight that the focus of the investigation should be the RG Kar College rape case but also asked CBI to expand the investigation and find out more about the mafia nexus related to the college.
3. Suspension Of Officials
During the hearing, advocate Karuna Nundy demanded the suspension of the college officials who were present at the crime scene and whose names have emerged in the CBI list for financial irregularities.
4. CJI’s Statement
CJI DY Chandrachud acknowledged the demand and stated that actions against the officials who are still working at higher positions should be taken. However, he also said that these powers reside in the hands of the state government.
5. Questions To WB Government
SC bench raised questions to the West Bengal government about the delay in installing CCTV cameras and separate toilets in hospitals and colleges. The West Bengal government in return gave a deadline for the infrastructure work which was acknowledged by the SC bench.
