Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder Case: SC Asks West Bengal Government To Not Use Power On Protestors!

The Supreme Court bench hearing of the Kolkata rape and murder case took place on August 20, Tuesday. The bench consisting of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra made some important remarks on the case and the Kolkata police. The CJI also made some key statements on the handling of the situation by the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government.

CJI Asks West Bengal Government To Not Use Power On The Protestors.

CJI DY Chandrachud expressed his concerns over the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The Supreme Court bench posed some important questions before the Kolkata Police about the mob that vandalised the crime scene inside the college. The CJI-led bench also bashed West Bengal’s government’s incompetency and directed the government to not exercise its power over the peaceful protestors who were raising their voices against the heinous crime.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court bench questioned West Bengal about the delay in filing the FIR against the culprit. The SC bench also noted that the crime was discovered during the early hours but the FIR was only registered at 11:45 PM. Other questions raised by the SC bench were about the failure of the government to maintain law and order around the crime scene. The SC bench also asked the West Bengal government about the immediate appointment of the principal in some other institute after he resigned from RG Kar Medical College.

The Supreme Court has asked the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation by August 22, Thursday. It has also set up a 10-member team to make a plan of action for the safety and security measures in hospitals.
