19 Days After Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder, President Droupadi Murmu Expresses Anguish. It’s Never Too Late To Speak Up!

Nearly 20 days after the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, President Droupadi Murmu spoke about it in a public statement. She declared herself as dismayed and horrified and that enough is enough. The news of the horrific incident came out on August 9 and the institute’s principal Sandip Ghosh has since then had many allegations of corruption. The state handled the case to CBI and the investigation is still ongoing. Amidst this, protests such as the Nabanna protest have been headed by students to get justice for the doctor.

President Droupadi Murmu’s Statement On Kolkata Case

On Wednesday, August 28, the president expressed her agony over the case. She stated that enough is enough. She pointed out that even when students, doctors, and citizens were protesting for justice, criminals were prowling around. She also mentioned that no civilised society can allow their daughters and sisters to such horror. Adding to this she also mentioned how society needs an honest, unbiased self-introspection and should also ask itself some difficult questions.

Remembering another horrific rape and murder case of Nirbhaya she said that since 12 years of that case, countless rapes have been forgotten by the society. She added that “this collective amnesia is obnoxious,” and that societies are too afraid to confront the past recourse to collective amnesia; it’s time for India to confront its past head-on.

As protests over the rape and killing of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9 resulted in violent altercations between demonstrators and police, tensions in Kolkata and Howrah increased. Significant injuries were sustained during the clashes, and 245 protestors were taken into custody when law enforcement resisted the demonstrators’ intended march to the Bengal secretariat, Nabanna.
