In the grim aftermath of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into Sandip Ghosh, the institution’s former principal. The probe has broadened to encompass allegations of significant financial irregularities and potential money laundering activities by Ghosh and his associates.
ED Probe Against Sandip Ghosh
Launched in early September, the ED’s operations have included a series of targeted searches across multiple locations in Kolkata. Notably, the residence of Chandan Loud, an associate of Ghosh, was raided, along with properties connected to the medical equipment supplier Octane Medical, and Ghosh’s own residence in Beleghata. Additional raids were carried out at Ghosh’s paternal home in Chinar Park and other properties in Murshidabad and Kolkata, which are believed to have been acquired illicitly.
During these operations, the ED discovered documents and digital devices that suggest a complex web of property purchases funded by the proceeds of crime. These findings have raised suspicions of a deeper financial network, possibly tied to the procurement processes at the medical college. The state government initially tasked a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with the inquiry, which was later escalated to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to the gravity of the allegations and the potential involvement of high-level corruption. Following the CBI’s report, the ED initiated its own investigation based on the information related to financial transactions and property acquisitions linked to Ghosh.
More Details
This investigation into financial misconduct coincides with Sandip Ghosh’s recent arrest by the CBI on charges related to financial irregularities at the medical institution. The ED’s probe aims to uncover the full extent of the financial irregularities and ensure accountability at all levels of this disturbing case. It has been over a month since the heinous crime took place, both Sandip Ghosh and the prime accused Sanjay Roy have been arrested by the CBI, but no further legal action has been taken against them yet.
