The CBI’s investigation into the distressing rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata has unearthed findings that counter initial speculations of gang rape. According to a forensic report, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer linked to the Kolkata Police, has been identified as the sole perpetrator responsible for the crime committed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Initial assessments had considered the possibility of multiple assailants due to the severity and nature of the attack. However, the DNA evidence and detailed forensic analysis have conclusively pointed to only Roy’s involvement. This individual was arrested on August 10, one day after the doctor’s half-naked body was discovered in a seminar hall at the hospital. The CBI scrutiny extended to reviewing CCTV footage which captured Roy entering the building on the day of the murder. Despite Roy’s history of domestic abuse and his unrestricted access throughout the hospital, the discovery of his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene played a crucial role in his arrest.

While the evidence supports a single perpetrator, the CBI has not yet closed the investigation and plans to consult independent experts for a final review of the forensic reports. This ongoing analysis follows disputed claims, including one from Dr. Subarna Goswami, suggesting that the injuries might indicate the involvement of more than one individual based on the analysis of a vaginal swab test. The victim’s parents had also argued in the Calcutta High Court about potential gang involvement, citing forensic details of significant bodily fluids found. However, these allegations were contested by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who clarified that the reported 150 grams referred to the anatomical weight of the genitalia and not to any fluid indicative of multiple attackers.
