Calcutta High Court nod on plea for ED Probe

On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court approved filing a plea for an ED probe against RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s ex-principal Dr Sandip Ghosh for financial irregularities during his tenure in the state-run facility. Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj permitted counsel petitioner Akhtar Ali to file the case, which seeks an order instructing the Enforcement Directorate to investigate suspected financial violations against Ghosh. Counsel Susmita Saha Dutta moved the division bench of Chief Justice T. S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya. She criticised the state’s SIT as an “eyewash” and argued for an early hearing on the application.

An FIR was filed for conspiracy and cheating against the former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital ex-principal Sandip Ghosh. A corruption case and a complaint by the health department followed this. More allegations including collisional bidding with dishonest contractors are also there. A special investigation team will investigate financial irregularities during Sandip Ghosh’s tenure using forensic experts to analyse account inconsistencies.
In the year 2021, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found financial irregularities at the RG Kar College. But even after this, Dr Sandip Ghosh did not respond to CAG’s multiple reminders. The CAG also found that the procurements of medicine equipment did not stick to state GST norms, which led to an excess expenditure of Rs 1.3 Crores. Again, no response from the college was received.
On August 9, the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The Kolkata doctor was brutally raped and murdered where she went to rest amid her 36-hour long shift. Protests across the country have been going on demanding justice for the deceased doctor.
