Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder Case: Bengali Actor Rituparna Sengupta Heckled At Kolkata Protests, Says She Could Have Died

Amid the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, doctors and other people have been constantly protesting outside the college for justice. Like many actors who have supported justice for this case, Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta also joined the protests on September 4 demanding justice for the victim. In an interview, the actor revealed that she was heckled and said that she faced harassment and even ‘go-back’ slogans.

Rituparna Sengupta On Joining The Protests

In an interview with AajTak the Bengali actor revealed that she was met with ‘go-back- slogans when she arrived for the protests which started from the Shyambazar area of Kolkata. She admitted that she was chased away as the situation escalated quickly. She said that the way people were pushing her, she could have died. She also revealed that they used crass language and that young boys and girls even hit her car. Sengupta added that they were unnamed and that they possibly entered all protests that way. She also said that such elements were given wrong directions to the protests and defocusing the masses.

Recalling this incident, Rituparna Sengupta shared concern about the safety of women in Kolkata. She also said that if this was the case for a woman among so many people, one can only imagine how unsafe and insecure the trainee doctor must have felt that day. She concluded by saying that she doesn’t understand this resistance against us and she felt that it was terrifying.

Among the long list of actors who have raised their voices in support of Kolkata’s rape and murder case, Anupam Kher joined the case as well. The actor demanded capital punishment for the criminal. Director Karan Johar also showcased his disappointment and shock over the case in Kolkata.
