Amid ongoing nationwide protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for more stringent and effective measures to ensure the safety of women in India. Speaking at the National Conference of the District Judiciary in Delhi on Saturday, PM Modi highlighted the severity of atrocities against women and called for quicker judicial processes in such cases.

What Did PM Modi Say?

PM Modi stated, “Today, atrocities against women and the safety of children are serious concerns for society,”. He acknowledged that while several strict laws have been enacted for women’s safety, there is a pressing need to enforce these laws more actively to provide a sense of security to women nationwide. The Prime Minister’s remarks came at a time when the country is grappling with the horrific incident in Kolkata, which has ignited widespread outrage and demands for justice.

Details On Kolkata Rape Murder

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The crime has led to massive protests and calls for severe punishment for the perpetrators. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy has been arrested in connection with the case, which has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also been vocal about the need for stronger central legislation to address such heinous crimes. In a letter to PM Modi, Banerjee reiterated her request for stringent laws and mandatory time-bound disposal of rape and murder cases.

In response to Mamata Banerjee’s concerns, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, highlighted the existing legal framework and urged the West Bengal government to implement current laws fully. She pointed out that despite the pendency of nearly 48,600 rape and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases in the state, the government has yet to operationalize 11 additional Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) dedicated to such cases.
