For many years, Indian women have been celebrating the auspicious festival of Karwa Chauth. For this festival, they fast for their husband’s long life. However, with time, and in the modern day, many husbands also keep fast for their wives. There is also a ritual called Sargi, in which women eat some food before sunrise. Sargi is a ritual that strengthens the bond between the woman and her mother-in-law. So you see, it’s also about celebrating women. The mother-in-law prepares the meal for Sargi. This is symbolic of the mother-in-law’s love and abundant blessings for her daughter-in-laws.

For Sargi, the woman mostly consumes dry fruits, various fruits, sweets, vermicelli, or halwa made with flour. Nowadays, many women also consume yogurt bowls and tea, because it’s a long day of fasting and one can only break it after moonrise. For Sargi, one should also keep themselves hydrated before taking on the fast, and for this they can drink tea, coconut water or simple water.

Not just food, but the mother-in-law also gives some nice gifts to the woman which are basically symbolic of womanhood, marriage, strength. These gifts include bangles, sindoor, saree, cosmetics.

This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 10, Friday. Women start the preparations before-hand and they apply mehendi. The also dress up mostly in red or some bright-coloured outfits. After the long-day of fasting, the break the fast after seeing the moon, and drinking the first sip of water from the husband’s hand. The couple celebrates this day together with good food, and some good time.
