For the longest time, we have never acknowledged the struggles of working during our menstrual cycles. The cramps, mood swings, and some very extreme conditions make it difficult for women to go about their normal workdays. However, it’s good to see that many states are considering these health concerns for working women. And in this historic move, Karnataka has also added itself to the list after approving official menstrual leave. Read here to know more about it.
Karnataka Approves Menstrual Leaves
The Karnataka Government has taken an important decision keeping in mind the health concerns of women. In this move, the government has now passed a judgement to allow one official menstrual leave every month to working women. This means that the professionals will now have 12 menstrual leaves, and this applies to all sectors like garment industries, government offices, various IT and multinational companies, and any other company in the private sector.
As per the various news reports, the government has taken this decision to support inclusive work environment, and also raise awareness around menstrual hygiene. According to an NDTV report, the State Minister has also stated that this decision would be beneficial for the women

Many other states like Kerala, Odisha, Sikkim and Bihar have also announced menstrual leaves, and now Karnataka has also joined the list.

It is a very praiseworthy move by the government and this will definitely help to fight the taboo that exists around periods in India. We think more states should adopt this move as it will not only be a relief to women who push themselves to work despite the painful cramps, but this will also raise meaningful conversations around it that are long due!
