Just when we thought we’d left the pandemic behind, a new wave of COVID-19 cases is back on headlines. While the number of cases may not be as alarming as before, the recent surge serves as a reminder that the virus is still very much around. Here’s a quick look at the current situation and the simple precautions you can take to keep yourself and those around you safe.
Current Situation Of COVID-19 in India
A review meeting of experts from multiple governmental health bodies was held on May 19 under the chairpersonship of the director general of health services. The meeting concluded and a statement was released to the public. The statement read that as of May 19, 2025, the number of active COVID-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country’s large population.
The statement also said that India has a well developed system for surveillance of viral respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR. And hospitals have been asked to monitor influenza-like illnesses and severe acute respiratory infection cases.
Kerala has recorded the most number of new infections since May 12, with 69 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 44 cases and Tamil Nadu with 34. Other states with new cases include Karnataka (8), Gujarat (6), Delhi (3), and one case each in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim.

New Variant Of Covid-19
The surge is by new Omicron sub-variants, particularly JN.1, LF.7 and NB.1.8. Symptoms of this new variant of Covid-19 include cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, brain fog, and conjunctivitis. These symptoms are generally mild however patients are advised to consult a doctor if they prolong.
Precautions To Take
While we all are aware of the precautions to take to prevent COVID-19. Here is a quick rundown: Make sure to get vaccinated timely, including booster doses. Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, maintain personal and hand hygiene, and make sure to self quarantine if you possess any of the symptoms listed above.
